Taylorville Research Station: August 30, 2007 : My neighbor, Jerry Kling, is a retired agronomist. He runs a grass breeding station for a company in Oregon. Every August, he, along with about 40 of his neighbors, plant about 3,000 varieties of seeds, into 24" x 24" plots. Everything must be done by hand, so that there is no mixing of seeds from one plot to the next. First we picked out the remaining rocks. Then the plots were marked out with red flags. Then the large wooden boxes were used to keep the seeds within the boundaries of each pair of plots. A third person rakes the seeds in. Once all the seeds are planted, the flags are removed, some grass is planted around the perimeter of the field, and cloth is placed over it so that the wind does not mix the seeds. Now we need rain!

The planting took about four hours. This was followed by a nice lunch, but my camera battery was dead by then.

The last two photos were taken three weeks after the planting.
